A Solar Eclipse

The passing of Dr. Hermann Scheer, for many of us around the globe, is equivalent to a solar eclipse. Dr. Scheer was an ardent supporter and leading guerrilla commander of the solar revolution. He fought hard for decades to ensure that his native Germany would become the leader in renewable energy. Dr. Scheer helped create the world’s strongest framework for renewable energy development and also collaborated actively, and passionately, around the world to bring about positive change and legislation to phase out polluting energy sources such as atomic power and fossil fuels.

Here in Canada Dr. Scheer was instrumental in nurturing the development and adoption of the feed-in tariff concept and he inspired politicians and new renewable energy laws. Dr. Sheer also was instrumental in making a reality the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). As the father of IRENA and the author of a plethora of paradigm defining literature his legacy will live on for generations.

A loyal and generous friend Dr. Sheer was always ready to help Canadian activists, students, politicians, and entrepreneurs. Many of us personally owe a high debt of gratitude to him for teaching us how to advance the cause of renewable energy in our jurisdictions.

Dr. Sheer also taught us to celebrate life, instead of mourning death, and today in these difficult times we intend to carry on his legacy until we achieve a more sustainable world and a fairer energy system. From the distance we send our warmest regards to his lovely family and to his many loyal friends.

May his soul forever rest in peace.
